One
Well-Conceived Illustration
is Worth
a Thousand
Words.
The
remote control for the Solaris medical laser uses
icons rather than text. This not only reduces
translation and inventory costs, it makes it easier
to see and use in surgical environments. As is
often the case with medical device submission
manuals, no device prototype actually existed at
the time the document was created. This device
illustration, created entirely in Photoshop, was
based on engineering drawings, user interface
design specs, and interviews with engineers and
product managers.
This
back panel label for a medical laser uses color
codes to distinguish the connections. The use of
icons reduces translation costs and simplifies
instrument setup in a surgical environment.
A
combination of line art, industrial photography,
and text make this instruction simple.
